Originally from China, Shuran Huang is an award-winning photographer who currently lives and works in Washington, D.C. As an international resident and traveller, she often found herself surrounded with people from diverse backgrounds and facing an identity crisis. Her volunteer experiences from tutoring students from disadvantaged areas developed her passion for visual storytelling and building the connections among different races and cultures.
As a recent graduate from Syracuse University, Shuran’s work focuses on memory, family, and heritage through moments of intimacy, reflecting on the missing connections in her childhood. Her most recognized body of work, Strands of Love, documents the history of a four-generation family-owned barbershop in Syracuse, New York and the family’s connection and impact in the greater community. Shuran’s work has been featured on National Public Radio, The New Yorker, Netflix, Visura, PowerHouse Books and The Buffalo News.
Previously, Shuran received a Grand Prize for Photo District News’ Faces Portrait Photography Contest, and was selected as a winner for Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Competition. She was also the alumna of 2019 New York Portfolio Review.
